What Is PUMaC?

PUMaC stands for the Princeton University Mathematics Competition, and Princeton’s own Math Club has organized it every year since 2006. It’s entirely student-run.

Team Eligibility

A full team is 8 students plus one adult coach. PUMaC prefers a team drawn from a single high school. It will accept a team from a well-defined geographic region covering several schools when that’s not realistic for a given area. A team that isn’t from one school gets bumped into Division A automatically, though organizers will hear an appeal.

Every team member, individual registrants included, clears the same bar: not yet 20 on the competition date, and not yet enrolled full-time at a college. International teams are welcome. They register on the same form as U.S. teams and get judged separately.

A first-time team from one school doesn’t need to solve the geographic-region rule at all. That option exists for schools too small or too rural to field 8 qualified students on their own, letting them combine with nearby schools instead of sitting the year out. A single school with 8 willing students skips that step entirely and registers as a normal Division-eligible team.

Registering Without a Team

If you don’t have 8 teammates lined up, register anyway. PUMaC places individual applicants on the same merit basis as full teams, using the mathematical background you list on the registration form.

You get slotted into a team of 8 for the Team Round, Power Round, and Live Round, and you take the Individual Tests exactly like everyone else, entirely on your own.

What Competition Day Actually Involves

Two Individual Tests open the day. You pick two subjects out of four: Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry and Number Theory. Each test runs 60 minutes and covers 8 problems. Division A gets the harder version of those same four subjects. Division B gets the easier one.

The Power Round is where PUMaC breaks from a typical math meet. It’s proof-based, not multiple choice or short answer, and Princeton posts it online about a week before the competition date. Your team of 8 works on it together. There’s no time limit until the on-campus day itself, which functions as the deadline.

Team Round and Live Round close out the day on campus. The Team Round is 15 problems the full team solves together on site, submitting one shared answer sheet instead of eight individual ones. Exact timing has shifted somewhat across recent years, so check the current-year rules rather than a fixed number here.

The Live Round is the part students remember. Teams sit together in one large room and work through three waves of three sets each, nine sets in total, over about an hour.

The first two sets in every wave carry four problems, and the third “exotic” set carries three, with the scoreboard updating live as each set gets turned in. Once a team moves on to the next set, there’s no going back to fix an earlier answer. Plenty of students call it the most fun and the most stressful hour of the whole tournament.


Is PUMaC Right for Your Student?

The Power Round rewards a different kind of practice: reading past proof-based problems and writing full solutions, checking reasoning instead of a final numeric answer. That habit is worth building well before the actual week-long window opens, since a team that’s never written a full proof before competition day loses most of that week just figuring out the format.

Team Round practice looks different again. It’s a group of 8 solving 15 problems together on one shared sheet, so the skill that matters most isn’t any one student’s speed.

It’s dividing problems fast, trusting a teammate’s answer on a topic they know better, and not burning the whole hour arguing over one hard problem while six easier ones sit untouched.
