CEMC Math Contests Explained: Gauss to Euclid, by Grade

Your child comes home with a note that says “Gauss Contest” or “CEMC.” The school office talks about it like everyone already knows what that means.

You’re not the only parent typing “CEMC math contest” into a search bar at pickup. It’s not one test. It’s five.

CEMC is the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo. It runs a ladder of five contests spanning grades 7 through 12: Gauss, Pascal, Cayley, Fermat and Euclid.

Each one targets a different grade band. Partway up the ladder the format itself changes too, from multiple choice to full written solutions.

What Is CEMC, and Which Contest Are You Actually Looking For?

Search “CEMC” on its own and two kinds of pages turn up. One is the University of Waterloo’s own contest-ordering instructions, aimed at the teacher who submits the paperwork.

The other is a handful of Canadian tutoring-company blog posts that assume you already know the acronym. Neither answers the question you actually have: which one of these is my kid supposed to take?

The CEMC name covers a family of contests. The five that matter for grades 7 through 12 are Gauss, Pascal, Cayley, Fermat and Euclid. People sometimes call them the Waterloo contests, after the university that runs them. They share a scoring philosophy and a reputation for rewarding careful problem-solving over speed.

They are not one exam with five difficulty settings. A grade 8 student writes Gauss. A grade 10 student writes Cayley. Pages that treat “the CEMC contest” as a single thing are usually written for schools. Parents comparing options need something more specific.

The CEMC Contest Ladder, Grade by Grade

Here’s how the five contests line up against your child’s grade. The grade listed is a ceiling, not a floor. A strong grade 8 student can write Pascal instead of Gauss if the school allows it.

Gauss (Grades 7 and 8)

Gauss is the entry point. It’s the contest most families in our guide to competition math for middle school will hit first. Twenty-five questions in 60 minutes.

A score out of 150. Every question is multiple choice or a short numeric answer. The content leans on arithmetic, number sense, basic geometry, and early algebra, all material a grade 7 or 8 class has already covered. It’s a reasonable comparison point to MATHCOUNTS if you already know that competition. MATHCOUNTS runs grades 6 through 8, an adjacent band one grade wider than Gauss. Gauss stays multiple choice throughout, while MATHCOUNTS mixes in a Sprint and a Target round with different pacing. A child who’s done either won’t find the other unfamiliar.

Pascal, Cayley and Fermat (Grades 9-11)

These three share one format: 25 questions, 60 minutes, a mix of standard multiple-choice and a short numeric-entry section. A student writes the one that matches their grade or below. CEMC caps it at one of the three per school year, even for a student who could technically qualify for more than one. Pascal is the grade 9 contest.

Cayley is grade 10. Fermat is grade 11. The content widens at each step: Pascal covers roughly the same ground as Gauss at a harder level, Cayley adds coordinate geometry and stronger algebra, and Fermat draws on close to the full grade 11 curriculum, often combining two or three topic areas inside one question.

Difficulty steps up at each level while the structure stays identical, so a family that’s sat through Pascal already knows roughly what Cayley will feel like a year later.

Euclid (Senior Level)

Euclid is where the ladder changes shape. It drops the multiple-choice format entirely. Ten questions in two and a half hours, and several of them call for a full written solution instead of a final answer alone.

The topics look similar to what a strong AMC 10 student would recognize (geometry, algebra, number theory, counting and probability, plus logarithms and trigonometry), but the answer format is the real difference: a right answer with no supporting work earns partial credit at best. This is the contest CEMC most associates with university admissions and scholarship consideration in mathematics, computer science, and engineering programs.

It’s open to any full-time student, though only students entered through a participating school are eligible for the official honour rolls and team scoring. Families familiar with the AMC/AIME ladder will recognize the shape: multiple-choice lower down, full proof-style work once you reach the top.

Multiple Choice Until Euclid: Why the Format Changes

The jump at Euclid is real, and it’s worth naming before a family discovers it the week of the contest. Gauss, Pascal, Cayley and Fermat all reward finding the right answer fast.

Twenty-five questions, an hour, mostly multiple choice. Euclid rewards showing your work instead: 10 questions, two and a half hours, and later ones that expect a full mathematical argument, written out the way a university math department would want to read it.

That’s a different skill from anything the earlier contests test, and it doesn’t appear automatically just because a student did well on Fermat the year before. Writing a clean proof under time pressure has more in common with the harder rounds in our ARML guide than with anything on the multiple-choice side of the CEMC ladder.

When Euclid is on the horizon, prep shifts from getting faster at multiple choice to writing out a full solution and checking whether a stranger could follow it line by line.

Can US and International Students Register?

Yes, with one catch that trips up families outside Canada: nobody signs up for a CEMC contest individually. A parent or a student can’t order one directly.

A teacher or department head sets up a CEMC school account, orders the contest papers, and runs the test on-site. There’s no separate portal where a parent registers a child the way you might for an online-only competition.

If your child’s school doesn’t currently order CEMC contests, two options are real: ask the math department to start (schools can request an account at any point), or find a nearby school or independent test centre that already participates and will let an outside student sit the contest there. CEMC states its full contest program reaches 300,000+ students in over 85 countries each year (the five-contest ladder’s own share isn’t broken out separately), so writing from outside Canada is common. It still runs through a registered site. It isn’t a home test.

CEMC also splits its planning by region: it publishes one contest-date and logistics sheet for schools in North and South America and a separate one for schools everywhere else, since a single global test day doesn’t line up across time zones and school calendars. A school outside Canada should register for the version that matches its region rather than assume the North American schedule applies. Ordering from outside Canada also carries a small processing fee on top of the base contest cost; check the current rate on CEMC’s ordering page before your school commits, since it isn’t a flat number that’s safe to quote here.

One thing worth knowing before hunting for a specific date: CEMC opens ordering for the coming contest year through its school portal in September, and it hadn’t posted final 2026-27 dates as of this writing. Recent cycles followed a steady pattern: Pascal, Cayley and Fermat on one day in February, Euclid in March, Gauss during a window in May. Confirm the real dates on CEMC’s own contests page once your school places an order. Last year’s calendar is a guide, not a guarantee.

How to Prepare for a CEMC Contest

For Gauss through Fermat, the highest-value prep is timed and grade-matched multiple choice. Practice at the real 60-minute pace instead of untimed problem sets, since part of the difficulty is finishing 25 questions before time runs out.

Gonit’s grade-wise sets fit here well because they’re already sorted by the same grade bands the contests use.

For Euclid, add a second kind of practice on top of that: write full solutions and have someone else read them cold.

A correct answer with an unclear write-up doesn’t score the same as a correct answer a grader can follow start to finish.

CEMC’s own past-contest archive at cemc.uwaterloo.ca/resources/past-contests has real retired questions in the exact format your child will see. Work through a full past paper under time before contest day instead of only drilling isolated problems.

Younger kids on the Gauss end of the ladder need less strategy and more repetition. Get comfortable finishing 25 questions inside an hour, and the contest itself stops feeling unfamiliar. Older students eyeing Cayley, Fermat, or Euclid benefit more from reviewing a handful of full past contests than from grinding hundreds of isolated questions, since the CEMC contests tend to combine two or three topics inside a single problem rather than testing one skill in isolation.
